Classes

Here is a brief description of the different dance classes available at Dance Studio West. We offer classes for every age and level! A minimum of six dancers must be registered for a class to be offered. If this minimum is not reached the class may be cancelled; however, we will do our best to accommodate dancers with other classes.

Download our useful letter for dancers and parents (pdf format) on the policies and procedures of DSW. Print it and put it on your fridge for future reference!

Creative Movement

This 1/2 hour class is available to dancers who will be four years old on or before December 31st. It is an introduction to dance, movement, and music. Teachers use games and songs to make dancers more aware of the different ways their body can move. It allows them to adjust to a dance studio environment without the structure of a ballet class. These dancers do not perform in our year end recital, but they will have special in-studio performances throughout the year for their parents/guardians.

Pre Ballet

This 45 minute class is available to dancers who will be five or six on or before December 31st and who have either never danced before, or who have done Creative Movement in the previous year. These classes introduce the ballet class structure and basic ballet moves. Games are still used as a teaching tool and basic choreography is introduced as well.

Ballet

Ballet classes are offered for beginners and experienced dancers for a variety of age groups from 7 to adult, as well as to 6 year olds who have already done Pre Ballet. Classes emphasize developing proper/safe ballet technique, musicality, grace, posture, and strength. Ballet is an excellent base for any dance form and our classes encourage having fun and building friendships while learning!

Tap

Tap classes are offered to beginner and experienced dancers aged 6 to adult. Using tap shoes allows students to develop a great sense of rhythm and get lots of physical activity. Our classes incorporate everything from classical tap styles to more current, popular dance styles, giving students the best of all worlds.

Jazz

These classes are offered to beginners and experienced dancers from ages 7 to adult. We combine a variety of styles in each class from musical theatre styles (think Fame) to hip hop and popular dance moves (think Janet Jackson). Classes include a warm-up/stretch, short moving combinations to introduce steps and technique, and a section of choreography at the end.

Modern

These classes are only available to those with previous dance experience aged 12 to adult (ballet experience is preferable for interested adults). It is not "modern" as in popular dance trends (for that you should take Jazz). Classes emphasize creativity and body awareness. A variety of modern/contemporary dance techniques are used but there is a focus on choreography.

Social Dance

Our social dance programs run in 8 week intervals for older teens and adults. Sign up with a particular partner and learn the basics of ballroom dances like the waltz and tango and Latin dances such as the cha-cha, rumba, and mambo.
Still not sure what to take? Don't see what you are looking for? Talk to one of our friendly staff and we'd be more than happy to help!
